November 21 - SMM reports that the average price of 8-12% high-grade NPI is 979.5 yuan/mtu (ex-factory, tax included), down 3 yuan/mtu from the previous working day.

Supply side, domestically, the fluctuating downward prices of high-grade NPI have led to shrinking profits for smelters, weakening their production drive. Additionally, the onset of the rainy season in the Philippines has made nickel ore extraction difficult, pushing up the prices of Philippine nickel ore. Consequently, domestic smelters may reduce production due to expanding losses. In Indonesia, new NPI smelter capacity is still ramping up, and some high-grade nickel matte production is being switched to high-grade NPI, so Indonesian production is expected to continue increasing.

Demand side, stainless steel is entering the year-end destocking cycle, with spot prices still fluctuating downward. Steel mills are extending their procurement cycles for high-grade NPI, and some already have long-term supply contracts, leading to weaker external purchase demand. Spot order prices in the market continue to decline, and high-grade NPI prices are expected to fluctuate downward in the short term.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Italian Steel Prices Set to Rise in Summer on New EU Safeguard Measures
Italy's steel market faces persistent downstream weakness, but the EU's new safeguard measures taking effect July 1, featuring significantly tighter import quotas and doubled out-of-quota duties, compounded by CBAM and antidumping constraints, are expected to sharply curtail non-EU procurement options, strengthen EU mills' bargaining power, and drive a price rebound during summer as inventories draw down. In the stainless steel segment, service center volumes collapsed 15–20% MoM in May as artificial price supports faded, with Assofermet seeing no near-term recovery signals.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Chinese Taiwan's Tang Eng Reports Decreased Stainless Steel Sales for 2025
Tang Eng Iron Works distributed approximately 159,000 tons of stainless steel products in 2025, down 13.1% YoY and falling short of its 216,000-ton budget target. Cold-rolled and hot-rolled output declined 14.9% YoY to around 159,000 tons, despite raw steel production rising 6.3% to 31,285 tons. The company attributed the declines to US tariffs, exchange rate fluctuations, geopolitical tensions, and oversupply from cheap Chinese steel exports. To improve performance, Tang Eng plans to stabilize core business profits, leverage land assets for non-operating income, and introduce sustainability programs tied to its core operations.
